The video and the photos attached concern the protests of Greek citizens against the new anti-environmental law 4685/20 "Modernization of environmental legislation...", called the “Hatzidakis” law.
The law includes provisions of strategic importance for the country's natural heritage and has provoked tempestuous reactions throughout Greece: 24 environmental NGOs, more than 80 ecological movements and local authorities, 70,000 citizens requested the immediate withdrawal of the bill (draft of the law).
The bill was introduced by the government while the country was still under a very strict quarantine due to COVID-19. Despite the severe reactions, it was passed by the Greek parliament on May 5th, one day after the end of the quarantine, with postal-votes and very limited Public Consultation.
For these and other reasons, the law is considered to raise many unconstitutional issues. The Committee of the University of the Aegean, the University of Thessaly, the University of Crete with the Natural History Museum of Crete, the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece, the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Greek Ombudsman, the Union of Administrative Judges of Greece, the Associations of Greek Archaeologists all emphasize that there is a conflict with EU Directives, the Constitution and of the Council of State.
On the substance, the law makes the wild nature of Greece pray to industrial and large-scale investment activities even within areas of absolute wildlife protection (NATURA 2000 NETWORK).
On May 24, 2020, another law 4688 was passed, entitled "Special forms of tourism and provisions for tourism development". This law delivers the (formerly slightly protected) seashore to private Interests. Among the provisions is the promotion of several tourism activities, making it easier for private companies to make "investments" with fast track procedures.

We ask for the support of the international media, collectives, environmental organizations, and citizens around the world to defend the nature and culture of Greece, which is undoubtedly a world heritage.
Your help is as valuable as ever.
