Global preliminary meeting for building a broad confluence of bottom-up
democratic structures to overcome the planetary ecological emergency.
6th to 13th september, Reyjkyavik (Iceland)
We are sharing with you the proposal to participate in a preliminary
meeting to discuss grassroots movements’ new political strategies in the
worldwide current emergency of both ecological and political crises,
with the goal to confederate in a transnational movement that instead of
protesting and making demands to politicians, focuses on empowering
people and communities around the world to take over the situation for
themselves and build the alternatives that the planet needs.
The facts about the climate and ecological emergency, about biodiversity
loss, and about many more natural events that threaten human and animal
life on Earth, are here.
The years 2018 and especially 2019 are seeing the awakening of new
climate and ecological worldwide movements like Fridays for Future and
Extinction Rebellion, which show how people are becoming ever more
prepared to take action and be part of the solution.
Until now, most of the actions have been focused around attracting the
attention of political institutions and some emergency statements have
been obtained. However, the reactions of the politicians do not reflect
the urgency that is perceived by the common people. Many realize that a
transition to a non carbon-emitting world is not possible within
capitalist logic, but still politicians that are part of this no-future
logic are petitioned for change…
At the same time, most of the new politics and the new left-wing hopes
of the last 5 years have been recently loosing traction, and instead we
are witnessing more authoritarianism and facism entering the world of
parliamentary democracy. With this slow process, how can we
realistically believe that parliamentary democracy is going to provide
the change the world needs?
We need new political plans for the current needs of humanity. That’s
why democratic confederalism and other forms of radical democracy from
below could be core elements to consider in the fight to overcome
dependency on the current failed politics.
As it has been said:
“You never change something by fighting the existing reality. To change
something build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete”
(Buckminster Fuller).
